Senate rejects abortion facility licensing

Recently, legislation to require licensing and inspections of abortion facilities, an effort which would ensure the safety of women, and was strongly supported by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, failed to become law. The initiative would have require facilities that perform 10 or more abortions per month to be licensed by the state commissioner of health. It would also have authorized inspections of facilities (up to two per year) with no prior notice required. Currently, abortion centers in Minnesota are neither licensed nor inspected by any state agency. MCCL Legislative Director Andrea Rau said, “This bill is necessary for us to ensure that the very unsafe conditions uncovered in other states never happen in Minnesota.”
