Father Anselm Thevarkunnel, 90, died Friday, Oct. 3, in India.
Father Thevarkunnel was born May 24, 1924, in Ramapuram, India, to Aley (Elizabeth) Puravakutt and Ittiavira (Abraham) Thevarkunnel.
He attended Sacred Heart College in Thevara, India, and Papal Seminary in Sri Lanka, Ceylon. Father Anselm was ordained to the priesthood by the Rt. Reverend Dr. Bernard Begno, OSB, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, on Dec. 27, 1957, for the Diocese of Kandy. He was incardinated to the Diocese of Duluth on Jan. 24, 1980.
Father Anselm was first appointed as associate pastor in the Diocese of Duluth of St. Leo in Hibbing in 1973, then served as pastor at St. Mary Star of the Sea, Duluth; St Joseph, Taconite; St. Mary, Marble; St. Martin, Tower; St. Mary, Deer River; St. Catherine, Squaw Lake; Holy Spirit, Virginia; Sacred Heart, Virginia; Sacred Heart, Mountain Iron; St. Joseph, Ball Club; Sacred Heart, Federal Dam; and St. Anne, Bena. He retired as pastor of St. Charles, Cass Lake, on June 20, 2010, and shortly after that moved back to India to be with his family.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 7, in Ramapuram, in the Diocese of Palai, India.
