All Souls Day in Cloquet
The Queen of Peace Catholic School students in Cloquet joined Pope Francis and Catholics worldwide in visiting cemeteries on All Souls’ Day — in their case Calvary Cemetery — and offering prayers for the faithful departed. The field trip was to learn about local history on a tour guided by Alvin Bryant, the cemetery superintendent, and to pray for the departed. A plenary indulgence is offered in November to the faithful who visit a cemetery and say prayers for souls in purgatory. Father Justin Fish, pastor, joined the students at the cemetery. The day included a three-part program. First, Father Fish lead a liturgical prayer for the departed. Then the Legion of Mary women from Queen of Peace Parish each took a class and took their own paths on walking rosaries through the cemetery. Finally, the students each received a slip of paper from their teachers with the Requiem Aeternum prayer, and they were allowed to scatter and pray at individual graves and headstones. The students truly liked the idea that they could pray for the departed, and they were especially excited about the third part of the program.
Veteran’s Day prayer service
A special Veteran’s Day prayer service was held at Marquette School in Virginia on Nov. 12. Mrs. Marianne Nanti, a Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary member, shared information about the history of Veteran’s Day and led students in a prayer for veterans active and inactive who serve or have served our country. Master Sergeant Pete Waldorf presented an American flag that had been carried on three missions to Mrs. Hanson, kindergarten teacher, and the now first graders. Mrs. Hanson and these students supported Sergeant Waldorf while he was deployed in Kuwait. Sergeant Waldrof is the father of Annika, second grade, and Jordan, fourth grade.
