St. Francis robotics team to attend world championship

On Feb. 3, St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School’s robotics team sent four teams to compete at the Minnesota State VEX IQ robotics tournament. From November 2017 through January, teams from around the state participated in local tournaments in order to qualify for the State Tournament. St. Francis had two middle school teams both qualify early in the season to go to state. There are four elementary teams in the program, and two of those teams were invited to compete at the State Tournament based on their robot skills scores. VEX IQ Robotics is a snap-together robotics system the students design, build, control, and program from the ground up. At the State Tournament, all four of St. Francis’ teams improved their competition scores significantly. After the qualifying rounds one middle school team and one elementary team moved on to the finals. Matthew Evens and Nathan Lokken, both seventh graders on the middle school team, posted a finals score of 141 in order to take first place in the finals of the Teamwork Challenge. The elementary team consisting of Shawn Marcussen, Beau Thuringer, and Jordyn Walker, all third graders, posted a finals score of 106 and took second place in the finals of the Teamwork Challenge. This elementary team also placed first in the Driver’s Skills Challenge with a score of 175. This school year was the inaugural year for the robotics program at St. Francis of the Lakes School in Brainerd. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring the teams going to the VEX Robotics World Championship or be a school program sponsor next season, please contact Maria Prozinski at
