Former teacher of year to speak at education dinner

The Northern Cross

For this year’s annual Dinner for Catholic Education, on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Duluth, the diocese has invited Guy Doud to be its keynote speaker.

Doud, a convert to the Catholic faith who lives in the Brainerd area, received the highest award that the education profession offers when he was chosen from more than 2.5 million teachers as the 1986 National Teacher of the Year for the United States of America. He was honored at a ceremony at the White House by then President Ronald Reagan.

Guy Doud

Doud grew up in Staples, where he graduated from high school. He then graduated summa cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1975. He moved to Brainerd, where he was employed by the Brainerd School District as a high school language arts teacher when he received the prestigious award.

Doud has addressed hundreds of groups since being chosen America’s Teacher of the Year. In 1989, he was a main platform speaker for the Million Dollar Roundtable and was rated as one of the top speakers of all time. He has addressed the national conventions of the Rural Electric Association, the National School Board Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, to name but a few.

The diocese has been hosting education dinners each year since 1993 to benefit its 12 Catholic schools. In the current format, two dinners are held — one at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, which brings together Duluth-area and Iron Range schools, and a Foundation Dinner held in Brainerd to benefit the school there. The Brainerd dinner was held Sept. 19 and featured Father Richard Kunst, pastor of St. John School in Duluth, as its keynote speaker.
